100 Tips to Market Your Music – Part 1

Author: vasil morice

Marketing is all the activities and processes of planning, communicating and executing a product, with a price, the promotion and the placement of an item to an end user. Your music is your product which you are then supplying to the end user – the music fan. Between you and the fan is a big space on how to bridge this gap. You may think that if you just get a record deal with some label, your prayers are answered and this instant bridge is built across that space. This is for the most part, not how things work today.

As an aspiring indie or unsigned singer, songwriter, or a musician in a band you can not do just a few things to promote yourself and expect success in your music career. Offline and online music promotion and marketing exposure is an ongoing process in this DIY age. Music companies are looking for artists that already have fan bases, sold CDs, and are proven ready to move up to a higher level. Presented here are more than 100 tips and ideas for you to think about and tweak as you will, to get noticed, gain fans, and get heard. You have to find a way to stand above the crowd, for talent alone is not enough.

Promo Tip #1 A music artist must start somewhere, that’s usually locally, but it’s better to not just dive in without a plan. But begin you must. Create a plan with some ideas and set goals as to what you need to accomplish weekly, monthly, and yearly. Start small and make it progressive. Reach bench marks and keep at it.

Promo Tip #2 Image is everything. Image is the complete package – artist/band name, look, performance, merchandise, and style, to how that brand is marketed. A stage name can be a descriptive statement of the image you or your band project. Be unique and interesting to look at in some way….build your own unique stage persona.

Promo Tip #3 Word of mouth has always been the best promotion – tell people what you do. Get people talking. Create your buzz by just giving enough info to get people interested, but hold some secrets close.

Promo Tip #4 Those that promote the most win.

Promo Tip #5 You may be a truly great talent, but without getting out there and consistently marketing yourself, networking, meeting the right people, maintaining your image, and being humble, your talent will only get you so far.

Promo Tip #6 Be innovative in your promotional efforts! The Internet has made it possible to hear a LOT more music, from a LOT more artists. You are now a very small fish in a very large pond – you will need to find a way to stand out, above and glow in the dark. Think beyond the box on every promo tip.

Promo Tip #7 Learn web basics to use the Net to your advantage. The Internet thrives on links, quality content, keywords and consistency. Properly use the tools of the Internet to build your online brand.

Do’s and Don’ts of a Great Boss

by Dan Reiland

If you were to describe the best boss you’ve ever had, how would you describe them? Tough but fair? Caring and a good listener? Competent and trusting? There are so many possibilities, and one of the most difficult things about being a great boss is that everyone would like something just a little different.

Some employees like their boss for reasons far removed from the actual function of an employer. “He lets me leave early every Tuesday so I can take my kid to soccer practice.” Or, “She paid for my trip to New York.” Generous, yes, but these kinds of things generally fall more under the category of a “nice person” and not necessarily a “good boss.”

I know the word boss meets with different opinions. In the 90’s “boss” was out and “team leader” was in. Every 5-10 years there is a new preference. I’m not sure what is “in” right now. My twenty-something friends say it doesn’t really matter, just keep it short and simple – so “boss” it is at least for this edition of the Pastor’s Coach. This article is in many ways a declaration that it doesn’t matter what word you use, from supervisor to manager, there are good leaders and bad ones – and a few in between who are just average. If you are responsible for one employee, dozens, or hundreds I’m sure you want to be a great boss.

I’ve had the leadership role of a “boss” for a long time. Some days are better than others, and I see it as a privileged responsibility and sacred trust – but I don’t take myself too seriously. That’s important – don’t take yourself too seriously. Check out these quotes.

“A Harvard Medical School study has determined that rectal thermometers are still the best way to tell a baby’s temperature. Plus, it really teaches the baby who’s boss.” Tiny Fey

“Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.” Doug Larson

“By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day.” Robert Frost

“No man goes before his time – unless the boss leaves early.” Groucho Marx

OK, enough of those! I trust that the following “Do’s and Don’ts” are helpful to you.

Don’t treat your employees like hired hands.

One of the most basic needs of a human being is to be treated with respect. Regardless of the status of a person’s job, a good boss interacts with each person in a way that communicates dignity.

There are several simple but meaningful ways to do this. First, listen. A leader (boss) can communicate so much through the simple act of genuinely listening. It also helps you know what a person thinks and why. You can get to know someone as a person which will help you both enjoy them and lead them better.

Accepting input from those who work for you is invaluable. From the obvious potential to gather some good ideas, to the more subtle communication that you value them. You might shy away from asking for input because you are fearful of being committed to use the input. You are not obligated! Use what is good and leave the rest. And when you do receive a good idea, give credit where the credit is due.

The bottom line is that people want to know you believe they are important to you and that their contribution matters.

Twitter Tools To Save You Time

Twittering, tweeting, tweeple….we’re at the start of a whole new dictionary that starts with “tw”! Some of you may be heavy into Twitter already and others may not even have signed up. I’m a recent adopter myself, but I’ve learned a few neat tricks that make my Twittering much more user friendly.

* TweetLater is a great resource that allows you to input multiple updates at one time, to post at future times of your choosing. So instead of needing to log on and update all day long, you can just go to TweetLater, post a day’s, week’s or month’s worth of updates, and they’ll all go up with no further effort on your part. Now sometimes you’ll want to post instant updates, like that you’re sitting at a cafe in Paris or something. You can still go to Twitter direct to do that, or, even better go to:

*Ping.fm, where you can link up all your social networking sites, so that one post goes up instantly across them all. No more logging into FaceBook, updating a message, then going to Twitter, then to LinkedIn, etc. You can do it all at one time on ping.fm.

*Also in your Twitter arsenal should be TweetDeck. This super handy application loads onto your computer and it will tell you anytime someone is tweeting about you, recommending you or re-tweeting what you post. How cool is that?! And if you click the little magnifying glass at the top of Tweetdeck, you can input the names of other topics you’d like to follow. I my case, I used the little magnifying glass to follow any tweets with the words “public relations.” Now they pop up automatically.

Experiment and try some of these time-saving tools to make your time online more productive and fun!
